Description
Basic Navigation training is a 6hr course (approximately) and is suitable for those with little or no knowledge of navigation but keen to learn map reading and navigation skills.
The course is led in a very person centred way and Sean keeps the candidate numbers low so that he can ensure each person learns the navigation skills they need in their own way of learning. Sean is a qualified Mountain Leader and so has been trained and assessed to ensure he has the knowledge, experience and skillset required to provide you with this training.
By the end of this basic navigation training course your learned skills will include:
-
- Set up and read a map
- Planning your route
- Pacing
- Timing
- Using a compass
- Rough bearings/half bearings
- Walking your route
- Group management
- Reading a weather forecast
- Access rights
For this course we use Beecraigs Country Park. Beecraigs is an ideal venue with plenty of parking, toilets and a cafe. The paths are very accessible and no big hills to walk up or down.
For this basic navigation course we will provide maps and compasses as well as various training aids. Each learner will need to make sure they are sufficiently prepared for being outdoors for the day. We will email you a recommended list once you are booked on to the course but as a rough guide this will include:
- Waterproof jacket
- Waterproof trousers
- Walking boots (or walking shoes/trainers with a good grip)
- Sufficient layers to be able to adjust to stay warm/cool depending on time of year you attend the course
- Lunch
- Snacks
- Water
- Warm drink ( whilst there is a cafe, we are only near there at the start and end of the course)
- Pen & paper
- Hat & gloves
- Sun cream (well you never know)
- Midge repellant (trees plus water = home for midgies)
- Day pack/Rucksack
- Personal sanitary pack
